10 Ways To Learn A Language Kinesthetically
Kinesthetic learners are the most physical of all learning styles meaning they absorb information through movement, touch and motion.
Therefore, the best ways to learn a language kinesthetically including playing video games in target language; having conversations on a video call with native speakers; by watching foreign language movies; reviewing vocabulary flashcards while doing something else; by visiting locations related to the information you are learning; playing scrabble to learn vocabulary; by taking regular breaks while studying; making hand gestures and movements to help you memorise things; using the game mode on Quizlet to learn vocabulary and finally walking while studying your chosen language.
1. Play A Video Game In Your Target Language
As kinesthetic leaners learn best by doing things, playing a video game in your target language, especially one where you can chat with other people, is a very logical way to study a language.
Some video games that I have heard many language learners play include:
- Call Of Duty
- Fallout 4
- The Sims 3
- The Lord Of The Rings Online
- The Witcher 3
- etc.
You can also play more simple word games such as:
- Word Hunt
- Hangman
- Crosswords
- etc.
2. Have Conversations On Video Call Lessons With Native Speakers
Probably one of the best ways to dramatically improve your language learning skills for all learning types and specifically kinesthetic learners is to have conversations with native speakers. Unfortunately this is very difficult to do in person unless you live in the country or you have plenty of friends who speak the language you are learning fluently. Fortunately there is an easy solution and that is to take part in online video call lessons.
Free Video Call Chatting Services
There are many companies out there that offer online video call lessons. Some of these websites offer free conversation exchanges where you are partnered up with a person who speaks the language you are learning and wants to learn english (or another language you speak fluently) in return. These are generally good, however as the person will not be a qualified language teacher, they will probably not correct you on everything or be able to help you out with other aspects of the language such as difficult grammar points.
Paid Online Lesson Style Video Call Lessons
Alternatively you can use online language school services that have zoom style video call lessons. Two great options for this type of language learning model are Rype and Lingoda.
Rype is a video call language learning model where you can learn privately (1 teacher to 1 student) with a 100% personalised curriculum and 100s of teacher options. It is a very affordable option for video call lessons as they can be as low as $9.99USD/Hour. Also you can learn anywhere, anytime 24/7! Check out Rype here!
Lingoda, on the other hand, offers both private and small group video call lessons. Each lessons is 60 minutes long and just like Rype you can learn online anytime 24/7. Lingoda has monthly subscriptions for classes or marathon courses where you commit to do a lesson everyday or every second day for 3, 6 or 12 months, have a one-time upfront payment and then can earn up to a 100% cashback if you attend every class. This is one feature that really sets Lingoda apart from other online language learning courses. It’s super motivating to put in the effort to language learn each day! This is subject to change so if you are interested you should definitely check out Lingoda here!
3. Watch Movies, Pretend To Be A Character And Repeat Their Dialogue
Watching foreign language movies can be a very passive way of learning a language. However you can make it active by choosing your favourite character and then repeating their lines of dialogue out loud. It’s a great way to practise your pronunctiation!
While watching a foreign language movie I highly recommend that you write down any new vocabulary or phrases that you think are relevant to you. Personally, I like to write my vocabulary down in a vocabulary table such as the one in this printable language learning planner or digital ipad language learning planner.

4. Review Vocabulary Flashcards While Doing Something Else
AS a kinesthetic learner it can be difficult to sit in one place while studying. That is why it is a good idea to review vocabulary flashcards while doing something else. For example you might review them while on public transport, while casually watching television or while cooking.

5. Visit Locations Related To The Information You Are Studying
Building connections between a word and the physical item that it means is a great way to learn vocabulary. You can do this by simply going to locations related to the information you are studying.
For example, if you are studying food vocabulary you might want to study it in a grocery store but if you are learning furniture vocabulary you might want to study it at home.
6. Play Scrabble To Memorise Vocabulary
Another way to learn vocabulary is to play scrabble. It is actually super challenging to play word games in a second language so I definitely encourage to take up the challenge!
7. Take Breaks To Let Your Brain Refocus
It is really important to take regular breaks while studying a language. You do not want your study sessions to turn into long marathons. Rather think of them as short sprints. A study session of around 10 minutes is a good length. Imagine if you did that everyday for a month! Maybe that could be your goal for the month. You could even track it in a printable 30 day challenge tracker!
8. Make Hand Movements To Remind Your Of Grammar & Vocabulary
As kinesthetic learners absorb information through movement and motion, making a series of hand movements for certain pieces of vocabulary or phrases can be an excellent way to get the information into your long term memory.
9. Use The Game Mode On Quizlet To Learn Vocabulary
Personally, I really like to study my vocabulary with digital flashcards on Quizlet. However Quizlet is not only a flashcard app but also has game modes to help you learn. You should definitely try them out!
10. Walk While Studying Things That Aren’t Very Interesting
Pacing back and forward can help you stay alert and interested while studying as a kinesthetic learner. If you are studying something in your foreign language that you find boring or are having trouble concentrating on, you should get up and walk around while studying it.
