How To Create A Study Space Without A Desk
You could find yourself in a bit of a pickle if you don’t have a desk and need to study or if there just is not enough room in your new dorm from a desk. Don’t worry any longer, we have got your back covered!
To create a study space without a desk one needs to choose to either invest in a smaller alternative or change some of their surrounding furniture into a desk. If one chooses to invest in a smaller alternative, they should consider getting a wall mounted desk, preferably a foldable or very slimline one, or they should consider getting a portable bed desk. Alternatively, to create a study space without a desk, one could convert a shelving unit such as a cupboard or bookshelf into a standing desk by removing the contents and then adjusting the shelving heights.
1. Invest In A Wall Mounted Desk
The most space saving way to create a study space without a traditional desk is to invest in a wall mounted desk. A wall mounted desk is a great option for students living in dorms or in small rooms. They are a great solution when you have limited floor space as they provide you the necessary workspace without imposing on precious floor space.
These types of desks are generally very small and have just enough space for the essentials such as your pencil case and your laptop. Some even have extra storage space however these are larger versions of this design and are a more permanent solution than a foldable wall mounted desk. I think one of the best features of a floating desk is that you can attach it to your wall at the best height for you. This is something a traditional desk cannot do.
If you do decide to create this type of study space you will also need to invest in a good quality desk chair or use a comfortable spare chair that is hanging around.

If you do not have enough space for a wall mounted desk, a portable bed desk is your next best option. While it is not the best situation to be studying on your bed as it is quite distracting, sometimes you just have to make do with what you have got.
A portable bed desk will provide you with the necessary support to write or use your laptop while on your bed. Most of these types of desks come with cool add ons such as mini drawers for your stationery as well as usb ports, book stands and/or cup holders. 3. Or Make A Cupboard Or Shelving A Standing Desk (Super Budget Idea)
If you don’t want to fork out any money to make your study space, you can always convert an open cupboard or a shelving unit such as a bookshelf into a standing desk. These are the simple steps you should follow to make an effective study space out of a shelf:
- Choose a shelf that is at an appropriate level for your standing height. If there is not a shelf at the appropriate level check if you can adjust the height and spacing of the shelves. If you can, move the shelves around until you have one at an appropriate height.
- Clear off the shelf that you are going to use as your desk. A clean workspace = increased productivity 🙂
- Check that your laptop or preferred device can fit inside the constraints of the shelf. If not re-adjust the heights of the shelves. You might even need to remove a shelf so that there is a big enough gap.
- You can now start working standing!
Despite this study space’s literally free nature, it is also good for your health. It is said that standing desks can reduce back pain, improve your mood, let your gain energy and ultimately boost your productivity! Also if you can’t be bothered making your own standing desk like this I highly recommend that you check this standing desk out from Amazon.
