What Size Tapestry Should You Get For Your Dorm Room?
Looking For A Tapestry For Your Dorm Room But Have No Idea What Size To Get?
Dorm rooms are on average around about 12 feet wide and 19 feet long (3.7 x 5.8 metres) meaning that you should get a tapestry that is about 88″ x 104″ (2.2m x 2.6m) for the larger wall and 68″ x 80″ (1.7m x 2.0m) for the smaller wall if you want the tapestry to cover the entire wall. If there is furniture such as bookcases and wardrobes along the wall, you will need to consider the smaller space and choose an appropriate size using the rules that a tapestry should be proportional to the free space of the wall it will hang on and once hung there should be space around the hanging.
How To Get The Right Sized Tapestry For Your Wall
All tapestries some in slightly different sizes and all dorm rooms have slightly different wall sizes as well. While I did give you a rough guide to tapestry sizes for dorm rooms in the introduction, I am now going to give you a full detailed explanation of how to perfectly size a tapestry for whatever size wall you have in your room.
Sizing Rules For Buying A Tapestry For A Dorm Room
- Never get a tapestry that is too small as it will look out of place on the wall and like a small artwork rather than a large piece of art that it is supposed to be
- A tapestry does not have to cover the majority of your wall, you might want to get a tapestry that covers half or part of a wall along with other wall decor
- Never get an oversized tapestry that covers a wall from edge to edge as there should be negative space around the hanging so it looks aesthetically pleasing on your wall
- When measuring up your dorm room wall factor in the extra room you will need for the rod that the tapestry will be hung on
- Standard tapestry sizes include: small (51″ x 60″), medium (68″ x 80″) and large (88″ x 104″) however many companies sell custom tapestry dimensions

Top Tips For Choosing A Tapestry For Your Dorm Room
1. Choose A Tapestry That Has A Tunnel At The Back
To make it easier for you to hang your tapestry in your dorm room, choose one that has a tunnel at the back. This is when the fabric is folded over into a loop and sewed into place, Inside a tunnel a rod can be inserted inside for mounting the tapestry onto your wall.
If your tapestry does not have a rod, you will have to mount your tapestry onto your dorm room wall using non invasive methods such as blue tack or removable stick on hooks.
2. Consider The Colours In Your Dorm Room
When choosing your tapestry for your dorm room make sure you consider the colours in your dorm room such as the wall paint colours, the carpet colour, the furniture colour and the colour of your doona covers, blankets and pillow cases. Make sure the colours within the tapestry match or compliment the colours found within your room otherwise your interior design will not be cohesive.
- Any tapestry colour looks great on a lightly painted wall e.g. white, cream, light grey etc. You might want to consider bringing in a bright or bold colour into your dorm room through your tapestry or continue a subdued mood through a light coloured tapestry
- A lightly coloured tapestry would look fantastic on a dark coloured wall e.g. dark grey, charcoal or black as there is high contrast
- It is more difficult buying a tapestry on a painted feature wall (a wall that has been painted an unusual colour). My best tip is to get a tapestry that has various shades of the paint colour in it. E.g. A feature wall might be painted blue and you might find a tapestry that has lighter and darker shades of blue within it to match.
3. Choose A Tapestry That Adds To The Theme & Mood Of Your Dorm Room
Choose a tapestry that contributes to the mood of your dorm room. For example:
- A tapestry that has nature motifs on it might create the illusion of a larger space
- A floral tapestry might add a romantic mood to your dorm room
- A mandala tapestry may give a sense of calmness and serenity in your dorm room
4. Find A High Quality Tapestry
It is very important to find a high quality tapestry so it will last for all the years you are staying in the dorm room. Some lower quality tapestries are very thin and will start fraying after limited use. Others are so thin that you can see the wall through it which isn’t a good thing either.
While you may be tempted to buy a very cheap tapestry online, for example one under $10, as you are a student and on a budget, you should probably get something in the $25 to $75 dollar range if you want it to last a longer time. If you need any ideas I suggest looking at the inexpensive tapestry options that I have linked below. 🙂
